About Cancer Research UK RadNet Manchester

CRUK RadNet Manchester is a Radiation Research Centre of Excellence in collaboration with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust. Established in 2019 and successfully renewed in 2024 as part of a wider Radiation Research Network, CRUK RadNet Manchester builds upon Manchester’s critical mass of radiotherapy research expertise and infrastructure.

Precision Medicine for All

Our vision at RadNet Manchester is to maximise patient benefit by building a world-leading, integrated and inclusive translational research programme. We aim to tackle the challenges patients and clinicians face directly by combining an understanding of treatments with our strengths in basic and discovery research.

We aim to embed this vision across our three research themes and two cross-cutting themes:

  • Theme 1-Levering the Radiotherapy-Immune Axis: Understanding how changes in immune cell populations can influence tumour and normal tissue responses.
  • Theme 2- Defining Lethal Radioresistance: Addressing how interactions between the tumour microenvironment and genomics can drive tumour resistance.
  • Theme 3-Wired for Impact: Developing a portfolio of inclusive and pragmatic trials leveraging real-world clinical data
  • Cross-Cutting Theme: Diversity of Inclusion: Providing equal access and outcomes to all patients treated with radiotherapy
  • Cross-Cutting Theme: Protons vs Photons: Examining the benefits of both therapies

An Introduction to CRUK RadNet Manchester

RGB UoMPaterson July 2024
Research supported through RadNet Manchester will allow us to understand better the complexities that influence an individual patient’s response to radiotherapy and how we can use this to define more personalised, effective treatment with fewer side effects.

Personalised therapy is dependent on identifying the biological indicators of treatment success or failure, whilst understanding also how patient specific factors such as pre-existing medical conditions, influence response. Our unique and inclusive programme of research aims to bridge these two themes to ensure better outcomes for all.
