Welcome from our Director

Welcome to the Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre. We are a translational research centre that delivers world-leading research across five cross-cutting research themes that span the full breadth of research, from the lab bench to the bedside. As the Director of this world-leading ‘Major Centre’ I welcome you to learn more about our centre, our vision and our cutting-edge research.

At the CRUK Manchester Centre, we have a vision to deliver a precision cancer medicine for all. One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, but thanks to innovations driven by Cancer Research UK, survival in the UK has more than doubled in the last 40 years.

But we still have work to do. The Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre is committed to help reach the target that within 20 years, three-quarters of people will survive. We believe the best way to beat cancer is by treating the individual, regardless of their ethnicity, gender identity, religion or other factors.

To achieve our vision, we will support groundbreaking laboratory, translational and clinical research across five key themes:

  • Cancer Biomarkers
  • Cancer Early Detection
  • Experimental Cancer Medicine
  • Integrative Pathology
  • Radiotherapy BioAdaption

Research is prioritised across seven key disease sites: breast, gynaecological, haematological, hepato-pancreato-billiary, lung, melanoma and prostate cancers. Areas of strategic growth for the Centre include central nervous system and paediatric oncology and immuno-oncology. In addition, underpinning all of our research innovations is digital technology, spearheaded by the Digital Cancer Centre, which cross cuts all of our research themes and helps to deliver technological innovations in artificial intelligence, routine monitoring of patient data, big data and machine learning.

The CRUK Manchester Centre is also committed to the continual development of the next-generation of cancer leaders. Each year we offer exciting PhD opportunities to help individuals further their careers in cancer research. Our highly competitive Non-Clinical PhD Studentships, Clinical Research Training Fellowships, and MB-PhD programme enable the discovery of new research innovations at both bench and bedside.

But research is never performed in a silo. We are supported by our many strategic partners across Manchester including the core-funded Cancer Research UK Manchester Institute. We also wouldn’t be able to operate without the generosity and support of the wider public, whether they are donating to the charity, providing input through their individual experience of cancer, or supporting us in other ways.

On behalf of the wider CRUK Manchester Centre team, thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy learning about the CRUK Manchester Centre.
